Affordable Modular Housing in Chelmsford

Chelmsford, Residential, Projects

GIFA: 5,217m2

Timescale: 44 weeks

The brief

Thurston was commissioned to deliver 18 bespoke modular homes across two sites for Chelmsford City Council, on behalf of Pick Everard.

The challenges

Due to increased housing demand in the area, speed was vital.

The solution

As project delivery needed to be quick, offsite manufacturing was a key factor in increasing delivery speed, with the added benefit that homes were ready to move into soon after being placed on site.

Each of the two sites comprises a mix of one- and two-bedroom homes, all with fitted bathrooms, kitchens, and living rooms. Fitted wardrobes and a mix of painted and clad external finishes were also included.

Thurston was selected for this project partly because of the firm’s SureSpan product. Thurston’s SureSpan volumetric homes are constructed in a factory-controlled environment, ensuring high standards of quality control with minimal exposure to weather. They are manufactured as transportable modules and delivered to site as completed homes. Each unit is designed as a “box”, linking together to form an entire building.
