As a leading UK company in offsite modular construction, Thurston Group is committed to championing women in the construction and manufacturing industries.

We aim to provide the support that all of our staff need to thrive, succeed, and build long-serving modular construction careers, helping with training, mentoring, and continuous improvement and skill building.

With this in mind, we’ve put together some advice for women looking to enter the construction industry, with help from the amazing women in our team, working across all areas of the business.

      • ‘Don’t be discouraged by the ‘male-dominated’ industry’, say Jia and Elizabeth: If you’re a young woman entering the construction industry, don’t be discouraged by the perception that the industry is male dominated. The modular construction industry has a wide range of roles, including production, procurement, project management, sales, HR, and marketing, and women are thriving in all of them!
        • ‘Keep an open mind and stay confident’ say Liz and Jia: Stay open minded about potential opportunities in the industry, and have confidence in your abilities. The modular construction industry values talent, dedication, and hard work regardless of gender, with skill and innovation at the top of the list.
          • ‘Embrace learning and mentoring opportunities’, says Liz: Everywhere in the modular construction industry you’ll find many great learning opportunities and mentors to gain knowledge from, all of which will help support you in your growth and career path. Here at Thurston Group, we’re keen to support our staff every step of the way, with regular training courses and one-to-ones throughout the year.
            • ‘Ask questions’ says Liz: The best way of learning, is though asking questions. Don’t be afraid to ask the obvious – nobody will expect you to know absolutely everything, and you can make every day a great learning experience.
              • ‘Be yourself’ says Lindsay: Don’t hold back on who you are, and embrace being a woman in the construction industry. Stay genuine to your character, values, beliefs, and empower the other women around you.
