Affordable Modular Housing in Chelmsford

Thurston Group has delivered 18 bespoke modular homes across two sites for Chelmsford City Council on behalf of Pick Everard. Due to increased housing demand in the area, offsite manufacturing was key for speed. As well as the advantage of the homes being ready for move in at handover. 

Each site comprises a mix of one and two bedroom homes, all with fitted bathrooms, fitted kitchens and living rooms. Fitted wardrobes and mixed paint and cladding external finishes also came with the homes. 

Thurston’s Surespan volumetric homes are constructed in a factory-controlled environment. Ensuring high standards of quality control with minimum exposure to weather. They’re manufactured as transportable modules and ready to be delivered to site as completed homes. They’re then virtually ready for use following site linking of modules and service connections. Each unit is designed as a “box”, linking together to form an entire building. 

Surespan offers a simpler and more flexible approach to building management as it lends itself to expansion, contraction and even relocation. The extensive use of non-combustible galvanised steel illustrates Thurston’s commitment to high quality, durable, lifetime homes. Its ability to resist corrosion is important, even after the galvanised surface may be chipped or scratched. As it supplies the strength and engineering precision advantages of steel while eliminating oxidation. 

One of the reasons Thurston’s was chosen for this project was due to our Surespan product. And being one of only two modular offsite systems with an independent BBA certificate – a universally recognised accreditation confirming a minimum 60-year design life.
