Cockfosters Train Crew Accommodation

3 min read | Matt Goff | August 2024

Thurston Group was chosen by Dyer & Butler as their principal offsite construction partner. This £2.5m project involved the design, manufacture, and installation of a SureSpan volumetric building to be used as train crew accommodation for drivers and support staff.

One of the reasons Thurston Group was selected as the superstructure contractor was its ability to manufacture offsite buildings rapidly and cost-effectively compared to traditional construction, without delays caused by extreme British weather.

The system core is produced from bright galvanised steel, offering strength and durability while eliminating oxidation and corrosion associated with traditional mild steel. This ensures long-term performance while maintaining the high-quality standards associated with Thurston Group. The building also incorporates renewable energy initiatives within the mechanical and electrical design, improving sustainability and reducing utility costs.

The building was completed to an exceptional standard both internally and externally. Thurston Group’s continued commitment to ISO 9001 quality management and manufacturing ensures consistency across all projects.

Cockfosters was not the first building of this type delivered by Thurston Group. In 2013, Thurston completed its first train crew accommodation building for Tubelines at Northfields, valued at £1.73m.
