Facilities
The new buildings comprise 189 individual rooms with en-suite facilities, kitchenettes, lounge areas and a building warden room with catering facilities. There are also nine rooms suitable for disabled students.
The three ‘Coverdale’ blocks also feature a pitched tiled roof and brick and render cladding. The steel pod design ensures that each room is virtually soundproof. While helping to significantly reduce heating and lighting costs. Working to tight deadlines due to working in a live higher education environment, modern methods of construction was preferred for speed and to ensure that disruption to the day to day running of the campus facility was kept to a minimum.
Working closely with the college, Thurston’s ensured the final design would meet all required specifications and that the buildings resulted in a BREEAM rating of VERY GOOD. The full scope of works covered the design, manufacture and installation of the buildings as well as internal decoration, M&E and external enabling works.
“This is the single biggest building project in the college’s history. We’re delighted to have worked with Thurston Group, whose state-of-the-art modular framework systems and insulation provide our students with attractive accommodation and the very best facilities.” – Professor Gareth Rees, College Principal at Askham Bryan College.
