The brief

Thurston was commissioned to design, manufacture, and install one-, two-, and three-bed bespoke modular homes for Hugg Homes, Southampton.

The challenges

The biggest challenge was flood risk management, as the build involved regenerating a former waste depot.

The solution

The homes are complete with fitted kitchens, shower rooms, and fitted wardrobes, with a marine-painted external finish. In order to support the immediate need for housing in the area, the homes will be in place for five years, although a BBA certificate provides additional assurance that they have a minimum design life of 60 years.

The homes were completed offsite, then delivered and craned into place, with deliveries staggered to maximise crane efficiency. Once in position, services were connected to existing outlets, allowing the homes to be occupied almost immediately.
