The brief

The key client brief was to deliver three specialist ward facilities for Wythenshawe Hospital, in the areas of diabetes, gastro and maternity.

The challenges

The build needed to take place with minimal disruption to the day to day running of the hospital.

The solution

Modular construction was an important element for the client to minimise disruption to the day to day running of the hospital. The facility comprised 74 module bays, providing 105 bed spaces, various consultancy rooms and relevant auxiliary and support facilities.

A partnering approach as principal contractor for this project helped develop the detailed specification within strict budgets.  Thurston’s project and design team worked closely with the client to ensure that deadlines were met and that the hospital building meets their exact needs and requirements. The team also made sure the facility met all building regulations.

John Berry, UHSM Estates manager said: “The wards that Thurston’s has constructed, containing 105 beds and a women’s health treatment unit, provide excellent accommodation for the Trust.”

Joanne Robson, manager of the Women and Children’s Service said: “The unit will continue to provide extremely important services to our female patients. It’s evidence of the progress we’re making in our drive to expand services for women and children. I’d like to thank all the fantastic staff involved in making this happen.”

The brief was to remove two temporary classrooms from an open courtyard, then design and build a two-storey, 24-bay modular classroom block.

Thurston was commissioned to design, manufacture and install units to a bespoke specification, from pre-designed layouts for 32 two bed homes.
