BPA – Kingsbury Oil Terminal

Thurston Group was awarded a project to design and build a new blast- and fire-resistant control centre at the Kingsbury Oil Refinery site in Tamworth, Warwickshire.

BPA commissioned a single-storey blast-resistant modular (BRM) building designed to withstand site hazards, protecting staff and ensuring business continuity in the event of a blast or fire. The Trespa-clad building includes a bespoke control room designed to best-in-class standards and in line with COMAH guidance.

Broken into five key operational areas, the building comprises staff welfare facilities, a process engineering control and server room, a production schedulers’ office, a conference room, and a plant room. DDA compliant, 100mbar blast-rated, and E160 fire-rated, the new control centre was also designed with a standalone fire suppression and UPS system.

Disruption needed to be minimised due to the live operational site, so Thurston’s modular building solution was a key factor in the decision-making process. Site personnel can now carry out day-to-day monitoring and automated functions from within the central control station at the heart of the new building.
