SUMMARY OF ROLE:
The General Manager will hold full P&L responsibility and be accountable for delivering operational performance across production, planning, commercial output, and team leadership. The role will report directly into the senior leadership team at Thurston Group and is pivotal in driving continuous improvement, lean thinking, and operational excellence across the business.
Lead and manage all day-to-day operations at the Storplan facility
Ensure output targets and delivery schedules are consistently achieved
Deliver strong financial performance through cost control and efficient resource planning
Implement lean manufacturing practices and drive a culture of continuous improvement
Oversee health & safety compliance and promote a positive safety culture
Drive commercial growth by enhancing customer satisfaction, delivery quality, and service standards
Develop and lead a high-performing operations team with clear performance expectations
Manage capital projects, equipment investments, and factory layout improvements
Work closely with the wider Thurston Group leadership team to ensure alignment with group strategy
Production Output: Meet or exceed weekly/monthly output targets
On-Time Delivery: Achieve >95% delivery performance against customer commitments
Labour Efficiency: Improve productivity per operative and reduce unplanned overtime
Right First Time (Quality): Maintain or exceed 98% first-time pass rate
Health & Safety: Zero lost time incidents and high compliance audit scores
Financial Performance: Deliver against site-level P&L, with clear cost-to-output ratios
Staff Engagement & Retention: Reduce turnover and absenteeism; improve engagement metrics
WIP & Inventory Control: Reduce aged WIP and improve stock accuracy
Desirable Qualifications:
Proven experience in a General Manager or senior operational leadership role within manufacturing (steel fabrication or related sector preferred)
Strong understanding of production processes, lean methodologies, and workflow optimisation
Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and delivering against KPIs
Commercial acumen with experience managing budgets, cost control, and P&L
Hands-on leadership style with a clear ability to inspire, engage, and drive accountability
Strong problem-solving capability and a bias for action
