Thurston Group was awarded a project to design and build a new blast and fire-resistant Control Centre at the Kingsbury Oil Refinery site in Tamworth, Warwickshire.

BPA commissioned a single-storey Blast Resistant Modular (BRM) building to withstand the impacts of site hazards, protecting staff and ensuring overall business continuity in the event of a blast or fire. The Trespa cladded building also came complete with a bespoke control room, designed to best in class standards, and CMAH guidance.

Broken into five key areas of operation, the building comprises staff welfare facilities, process engineers control and server room, production schedulers office, a conference room and a plant room. DDA compliant, 100Mba blast-rated and E160 fire-rated, the new control centre was also designed with a standalone fire suppression and UPS system.

Disruption needed to be minimised due to it being a live operational site so Thurston’s modular building solution was a key factor in the decision-making. Site personnel can now carry out the day to day monitoring and automated functions of the wider site from inside the central control station at the heart of the new building.

The brief was to remove two temporary classrooms from an open courtyard, then design and build a two-storey, 24-bay modular classroom block.

Thurston was commissioned to design, manufacture and install units to a bespoke specification, from pre-designed layouts for 32 two bed homes.
